ABOUT TROOP 32
Wow 83 years and counting!!
Troop 32 is celebrating 82 continuous years as a registered
Boy Scout troop! We have grown in the last few years to a troop of 180+ boys and
200+ adults, that makes us one of the oldest and largest troop's in Boy Scouting.
Our Story
During
1922,
The National Knights of Columbus Convention adopted scouting as the
official
program for boys 12 to 15 years of age. The Leadership of Knights
of
Columbus Council #759 chartered Boy Scouts of America Troop 32 on March
17,
1927. Mr. George Cook was instrumental in organizing the
troop.
When the troop was organized, there were fewer than 2,000 scouts in the
Fort
Worth Area Council. On the 1931 troop registration, there were 35
boys.
The troop was made up of local boys, orphans, and a few who had
transferred
from other units. Although the charter reflects Charles Gomer as
Scoutmaster,
it was generally recognized that the real leadership of Troop 32 was
John
Edward “old man” Gillespie through the first 49 years of the
troop.
Dozens of orphans came to Troop 32 and found a father figure in J. E.
Gillespie.
The troop now boasts a registered membership of over 140 scouts.
In the
history
of T32, there have been only five additional scoutmasters: Mr.
A. L.
Crouch (the judge), Mr. Al Walker, Mr. Bruce Simonson (the bear), Mr.
Jerry R. Lewis from spring 2002 to fall 2006, Mr. Brian
Polhemus fall 2006 to spring 2008, and currently Mr. Mark Gleason.
The troop moved from its downtown Fort Worth
meeting place to Keller, Texas in the early 1990’s. The Troop typically meets each Tuesday night from 7:00PM to
8:30PM at the Knight's of Columbus Hall, 1709 Whitley Road in Keller, Texas. But please check our activities calendar to verify this
as the best laid plans do change from time to time. Meetings are led by the Senior Patrol
Leader
and his staff. Plans for various activities are presented and
voted
on by the scout membership. The troop has a scout membership of
about 150 plus an adult
membership of over 140 serving as assistant scoutmasters, committee
members, and merit badge counselors.
In
May
2002,
Troop 32 celebrated its 75th Anniversary with a celebration held at
Keller High School.
A 75th Anniversary Mass was held on
Saturday,
August
27,
2002.
The Charter Organization Representative is Mr. Dale Shipman. Troop Committee Chair is Mr.
Ken Gordon.
