TROOP 32 RECHARTER

What is Recharter?

As an organization we are required to "recharter" or pay our annual dues to Boy Scouts of America (BSA) once a year. On top of the dues we pay to BSA, Troop 32 has its own fees that we charge our members to help cover the cost to run the troop. These fee's pay for many different items such as new merit badge books, advancement patches, merit badges, new/replacement camping equipment like chuck boxes and the items inside each, cast iron pot for making the cobbler we all like, lantern's, cook stoves, the troop trailer, and the list goes on.

Troop 32 has to complete it's recharter by the end of March each year. Now you might wonder why are we collecting money in January and February. That is very simple, BSA wants us to recharter in a timely manner. What most of us don't think about is when we pay our fee's to the troop, BSA still has to process all of our paper work and that needs to be completed BEFORE the end of March so that we stay members in good standing. This affects the insurance that is carried on us as a troop by BSA when we travel as a troop for an example. To give us an incentive to complete the recharter in a timely manner BSA gives the troop extra benefits if we complete it within a few days of the beginning of March. Making our deadline is a required audit point on the list of items we need to fulfill to qualify for "Quality Unit".

What does "Quality Unit" do for us? A real quick item: those advancement patches that each of our son's wear are free to the troops who qualify. With a troop the size of 32 that adds up to a lot of money, money that would be enjoyed by the troop in other ways.

The cost:
Each Scout (youth under the age of 18) is $75.00: of that $17.00* goes to BSA, and the remaining $58.00 stays with the troop.
Each Scouter (18 or above) is $25.00: of that $17.00* goes to BSA, and the remaining $8.00 stays with the troop.
Boys' Life magazine is $12.00 additional, and is paid directly to BSA.
**** On February 11th, 2008 the committee voted to cap the cost to any family at $100.00, Boys' Life is still additional. ***

An example: 2 scout's, 1 scouter, and Boy's Life magazine for 1 year in a family is $112.00

Common Questions You Might Have

Q: If I am already a member of the Troop, what do I do? How do I "recharter or renew" my membership?
A: If you currently a member of Troop 32 you need to see the recharter chairman with your check book in hand, or if cash is your preferred method of payment you will need to see the Scouters taking money at each meeting, tell them you have cash for recharter, get a receipt, and then take the receipt to the recharter chairman to make sure you get credit for paying your due's. If the recharter chairman does not know you have paid you might be dropped from our role, ; this means you are no longer a scout/scouter after the deadline. If this happens you will be required to complete the applications again, sorry no way around this. You do not need to fill out ANY paperwork if recharter on time!

Q: I am an adult why should I join the Troop?
A: Joining the Troop will give you many opportunities to camp with your son, to aid the Troop if needed during outings. If you do not join we CAN NOT allow you attend outings, you CAN NOT carry any other scouts but your son. We must enforce these rules for the protection of all our scouts. You must also complete "Youth Protection Training" which is provided free through the Longhorn Council website. Our sponsoring organization, the Knights of Columbus 759, also requires each Scouter to complete the Keeping Children Safe class. a class provided to us through the Catholic Dioceses.

Q: What if my son and I just rechartered with Cub Scouts, and we are crossing over?
A: That is easy: The recharter chairman needs to know which Pack you are crossing over from and when your recharter was complete. The transfer fee is $1.00 paid to BSA, and $58.00 for the troop’s fee for your son, and $8.00 for the troop’s fee for adult's. This pricing is assuming the Pack renews on the same 12 calendar months as the troop.

Q: What if we rechartered as a Cub Scout in a different month?
A: See the recharter chairman to find out how the fees will be adjusted. An additional partial year's fee, which BSA charges us, may be required. This additional fee covers the months from your other units recharter month to ours. For example if your pack recharters in December then we collect the fee for Jan, Feb, and March of the next year which puts you on our time table.

Q: It is the middle of the year and my son and I want to join, we are new to Scouting or did not recharter with our last group, how much is it?
A: See the recharter chairman for the prorated fee's and the Troop's annual dues.

Q: What if I want to be an adult member in the Pack as well as Troop 32? Do I have to pay both organizations?
A: No you can be registered with one of the units for no additional fee. Just tell the recharter chair about this. But you must still pay one of the groups your annual fee.

Q: What if the cost is a problem?
A: Talk with the recharter chairman, these situations are kept in strict confidence. Being a large Troop with a lot of history we do have sponsor's who may be able to help.

Q: What forms do I have to turn in at the annual renewal?
A: If you are a member in good standing with BSA you need to turning your funds for the annual renewal, and your medical forms part A & C.

Q: As an adult what forms do I need to turn in if I am new to scouting and/or new to this troop?
A: You need to turn in the following: Completion certificate for Youth Protection Training, completed Adult application, your part A & C medical forms, and your funds(money/check).

Q: For a youth what forms do I need to turn in if I am new to scouting or just new to this troop?
A: You need a complete "youth application" your part A & C medical forms, and your funds(money/check).

We want to make membership and keeping your membership as easy as possible.
Hopefully this has answered some questions about "recharter".

Effective June 1, 2010: • -- Youth Protection training is required for all registered volunteers. • -- New leaders are required to take Youth Protection training before they submit an application for registration. The certificate of completion for this training must be submitted at the time application is made and before volunteer service with youth begins. • -- Youth Protection training must be taken every two years. If a volunteer's Youth Protection training record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be reregistered.
